Overview

Newmarket, located approximately 50 kilometers north of Toronto in the Golden Horseshoe region of Southern Ontario, is a town of approximately 88,000 residents. The name of Newmarket stems from its original settlement as a “New Market” in contrast to the “Old Market” of York. Since the 1980s, the expansion of Ontario Highway 400 to the west and the construction of Ontario Highway 404 to the east increasingly turned Newmarket into a commuter town. The GO Commuter Train station in Newmarket further connects Newmarket to Toronto.

This segment of Main Street, situated between Water St. to the south and Aggers St. to the north, runs through the historical Main Street Heritage Conservation District – the town’s downtown area which has served as a bustling hub of commerce and cultural activity for the last 100 years.
