Overview

Avenue du Mont-Royal is a major East-West commercial artery in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough of Montreal, Quebec. Spanning from the base of Mont Royal, the street traverses the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough from Park Avenue to Frontenac Street and provides unobstructed views of the mountain and Olympic Stadium. The focus of this case study is the stretch of Ave. du Mont-Royal situated between the major North-South arteries of St. Denis Street and Papineau Street.

Avenue du Mont-Royal is a bustling hub of commercial activity and is renowned for its diverse array of local shops, restaurants, and bars. Since 2020, Ave. Mont-Royal undergoes pedestrianization from June to September. This transformation creates 36-block long pedestrian street and leads to commercial engagement spilling onto the street, enhanced programming and placemaking, and a surge in the number of visitors to the area.

The building typology of this mixed-use corridor remains relatively consistent with two to three-story buildings, featuring active commercial uses on the ground floor and residential units above. The surrounding residential area consists almost exclusively of multiplex housing. Together, this mixed-use multiplex typology is representative of the aesthetic charm of the Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood.

The street contains one circulation lane and on-street parking in each direction but no dedicated bike lane. Multiple bus lines travel along Avenue du Mont-Royal with bus stops present on both sides of the street. On the southwestern end of the street segment is the Mont Royal Metro station, which serves the Orange Line of the Montreal Metro.

Since 2020, Avenue du Mont Royal has been pedestrianized and expanded space is given to pedestrians to stop and linger with temporary street furniture, benches, and tables. Many businesses expand onto the sidewalks and street with terraces and temporary structures.
